Alex Turnage was a man that his children knew as dad, his sisters knew as brother, and friends knew as their dubbed name "Eleck". His sisters Katherine, Vicki, and Emma Jean were known to be the vessels that kept everyone connected in some way. Whether dad was there or not we all found comfort in knowing that his sisters embraced his children as if they were their own. We all can remember something that each of them offered to us, whether it was conversation, an opportunity to be photographed, company, music, or a bite to eat. When we were around them we knew that we were a part of a bigger Turnage family than we had ever imagined.
Daddy and his sisters instilled in us the love of being a Turnage. We saw in them class, grace, and dignity. Daddy was a proud and strong man who loved each of his children in his very own way. Each of us knew that we were "Eleck's child! This year marked the 14th anniversary of our dad's death and we still honor and miss the man and the memories he left with each of us. Our connections to each other have remained despite our distances, ages, and lack of all of us ever being together in the same room. We decided it was time to forge into new territory and make an effort to move beyond the phone to a physical meeting. As far as we know our family has never had a family gathering. This year we are choosing to honor the man we know as dad as well as the women we know as our aunts in this special gathering! We hope to have you join us this year where it all started in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Click the videos to enjoy one of dad's favorite artist Johnnie Taylor! |
